Marans

Marans are also known as "Chocolate Eggers" meaning their eggs are a deep chocolate brown color. The Maran breed has several different varieties, but the one that has captured the most attention in the US recently is the Black Copper Marans. Although they are rising in popularity the breed has not been around that long, it has a history that has gone through ups and downs and almost near extinction. A mature female Maran can weigh up to 6.5 lbs and are said to be quiet and gentle towards people and other chickens. They are a very active bird and enjoy foraging and free ranging, but can tolerate confinement fairly well. Marans are also quite hardy in the winter months
